In 1833, the Matthäuskirche was built as the very first Protestant church in Munich, based on a design by the royal senior architect Johann Nepomuk Pertsch. The building was demolished by the National Socialists in 1938 because it was considered a "traffic obstruction", as Sonnenstraße was planned to become a large, wide parade boulevard.
