Viktor Oskar Tilgner here depicts his friend Hugo Wolf at the age of 32 in a half relief. To our knowledge, this previously unknown portrait of the composer can be considered as a unique piece in Tilgner's oeuvre.

Tilgner's Mozart monument in Vienna's Burggarten or the Anton Bruckner monument in Vienna's Stadtpark, his architectural sculptures at the Burgtheater and the Neue Hofburg as well as the Tilgner fountain in the Volksgarten are among the best-known works of this main representative of the Neo-Baroque style of Viennese sculpture, along with his portrait busts (often in glazed plaster) of Grillparzer, Hebbel, Makart, Empress Elisabeth and others.
