Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier

Lyon 1815 - 1891 Paris

Le Dimanche, 1850

Oil on panel
22,5 x 29,9 cm
Signed and dated lower right: "Meissonier 50"

Our painting reflects Meissonier's ambitious expansion in his répertoire. Initially his reputation was based on his genre paintings, mainly set indoors. By choosing a complex outdoor subject he allowed himself to explore his interest in landscape settings, directly referring to his immediate surrounding, the city of Poissy, where he had acquired a property just a few years before in 1846.
