The sculptor David d'Angers was known for his medallions of great contemporary personalities. Enthusiastic about Goethe, they met in Weimar 1829. A larger-than-life bust (Musée d'Orsay, Paris; Duchess Anna Amalia Library, Weimar) and this medallion were created. Apart from Goethe, David d'Angers’ remarkable contacts among leading German artistic figures included Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, Carl Friedrich Schinkel et al.
