Eleonora Duse was one of the most important actresses at the turn of the century. Hildebrand had long admired E. Duse and had the wish to portray her. When she retired to her house in Florence in 1909, the opportunity arose. Hildebrand decided to sculpt a relief that later served as a model for a bronze plaque (see Haas, p. 177).
