We kindly thank Prof. Christian Lenz, Munich, for his confirmation of the drawing which he dates to Marées' late career 1880-85. He compares it with two other red chalk drawings of men holding horses (Meier-Graefe 443 and 469) and most closely a drawing from the Beck collection (Sotheby's London, 9 October 2002, lot 183). The painting of "Saint George" (M.G. 506) and the "Triptych of Riders" (M.G. 594) are of the same period. (written communication, December 2016).
