In 1833, the Matthäuskirche was built by King Ludwig I. as the first Protestant church in Munich, based on a design by the royal architect Johann Nepomuk Pertsch. The stepmother of Ludwig I., Friederike Karoline Wilhelmine, as well as his wife Therese, were devout protestants.
The building was demolished by the National Socialists in 1938 because it was considered a "traffic obstruction", as Sonnenstraße was planned to become a parade boulevard.
