Portrait of Richard Strauss, c. 1920
Oil on Canvas
90 x 75 cm
PROVENANCE
Studio of the artist
Estate of Max Rimböck
Another portrait in an informal setting is to be found in his house, Villa Strauss, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Ill. see exhib. cat. Richard Strauss - Autographen, Portraits, Bühnenbilder, Ausstellung zum 50. Todestag, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich 1999, p. 160, no. 172, color ill. p. 288).
Our hitherto unknown portrait from the artist's estate depicts Strauss with the conductor's baton and tailcoat. During the 1920s Rimböck had a studio in Munich and was already a well known portrait painter. Both works were probably commissioned by the Strauss family.
